Masdar Clean Energy and Azerbaijan Collaborate on Landmark Solar Power Project
Masdar Clean Energy, a prominent renewable energy company based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has reached a significant milestone in its collaboration with Azerbaijan. The first solar panel of a photovoltaic power station, funded by Masdar, was successfully installed in Azerbaijan this week.
The announcement was made by Parviz Shahbazov, the Energy Minister of Azerbaijan, who took to Twitter to share the news. The solar panel installation took place at the Garadagh Solar Power Plant, located in the Garadagh district of the capital city, Baku. The plant, with a capacity of 230 megawatts (MW), is expected to be operational by the end of the year.
The development of the Garadagh Solar Power Plant is part of a larger project by Masdar, which signed an implementation agreement in January 2020 to develop a utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) project in Azerbaijan. This landmark solar project, known as the Garadagh (Area 60) Solar PV Plant, is the country’s first foreign investment-based independent utility-scale solar project, structured as a public-private partnership.
In April 2021, Masdar signed crucial agreements, including the Investment Agreement with the government of Azerbaijan and the Power Purchase Agreement and Transmission Connection Agreement with Azerenerji, the state-run power company. These agreements solidified the commitment of all parties involved in making this renewable energy initiative a reality.
Masdar, known for its expertise in developing and operating utility-scale renewable energy projects, began construction on the $200-million Garadagh Solar Power Plant in March 2022. Once operational, the plant is expected to be one of the largest foreign investments in Azerbaijan’s renewable energy sector.
The collaboration between Masdar and Azerbaijan exemplifies the UAE’s dedication to advancing renewable energy on a global scale. Through this partnership, the UAE is sharing its expertise and supporting the development of sustainable solutions in Azerbaijan. The installation of the first solar panel marks a significant milestone in this joint effort to harness the power of clean energy and drive the transition towards a greener future.
The Garadagh Solar Power Plant not only contributes to Azerbaijan’s renewable energy goals but also serves as a testament to the potential of international collaborations in advancing sustainable development. As countries around the world recognize the urgency of addressing climate change, initiatives like these demonstrate the power of partnerships in driving the transition to a low-carbon economy.
With Masdar at the forefront of this project, the UAE continues to showcase its commitment to renewable energy and the global pursuit of sustainability. Through its investments, expertise, and technological advancements, the UAE is making significant contributions to the growth of the renewable energy sector worldwide.
As the Garadagh Solar Power Plant nears completion and prepares to deliver clean energy to Azerbaijan, it stands as a shining example of the UAE’s dedication to promoting a greener, more sustainable future. The installation of the first solar panel is a momentous step forward in this remarkable renewable energy journey, marking the beginning of a new era of clean power in Azerbaijan.
